Students have different learning styles, for example I learn better with visual learning, for me photos and hands on classes are the best environment to learn in. In a classroom when hit with a wall of text it can be off putting to some students and the use of an avatar can get some students engaged in the class differently than what they have experienced before.
Avatars are also a method of self expression and would fulfill art requirements, the student would have a good time creating a avatar that expresses their own personality.
